Assam Silk Saree: The Assamese Golden Treasure's History- Indian Silk House Exclusives
Muga silk from Assam is one of the world's most valuable
silks. It can only be found in Assam and nowhere else. This Silk is entirely
golden yellow sets it apart from all other varieties. Muga is an Assamese word
that means yellowish. It is derived from the Muga Silkworm, which dates back to
the dinosaur era and is so sensitive that it cannot tolerate even minor
pollution. Antheraea assamensis, a semi-cultivated silkworm, is used to make
it. It's completely natural and organic with the strongest natural fibre
available.
It is the most expensive type of Silk and is only used to
make items for the wealthiest people. Muga Silk's longevity is one of its most
appealing characteristics. In most cases, a Muga Silk fabric outlast the
wearer. It is the best Assam
Silk Saree.
It is famous for its tenacity. It can be dry-ironed while
still moist to achieve a fine texture or left unironed to achieve a crushed
look. This is a one-of-a-kind cloth with a golden sheen that gets better with
age. It is suitable for all types of thread embroidery. Most notably, despite having
a naturally golden radiance and not requiring dyeing, it is dye-compatible with
most dyes.
Origin & History
According to conflicting reports, Muga Silk has been
cultivated and weaved for a long time, but the golden age can be traced back to
the period between 1228 and 1828, during the reign of the Ahom kings. The Ahom
emperors encouraged the commercialization of Muga Silk. They had decided that
the kingdom's highest officials would wear only Muga Silk garments. Because
they were under royal control, many of Muga Silk's looms were known as
Rajaghoria looms.
Muga silk has been designated as a Geographical Indication
(GI) since 2007, and the Assam Science, Technology, and Environment Council has
recognized the mark as authentic manufacturing. The Central Silk Board of India
inspects Muga silk products and certifies their authenticity, allowing traders
to use the GI brand.
